Last Thursday, March 25 at 10.00 the webinar organized by the consultancy KPMG and the Barcelona Nautical Cluster took place. The conference was used to discuss and get to know in depth two current issues that are of interest to Cluster members: European Funds and technology.

More than twenty members took part in this online conference, which was introduced by the CEO of the Cluster, Andor Serra. In his speech, he said that the companies associated with the Nautical Cluster have been working for many years so that it is ready to be a benchmark and a hub for the Blue Economy. He emphasized the need to work on zero-emission projects that promote the circular economy and improve waste. Serra pointed out that the Cluster "must be a space where we can design and work on innovative projects that truly transform our environment". He also stated that from the Cluster “we will work on alternatives to get out of the crisis that the pandemic has brought us and that one way to do this is through the European Funds. That is why we highly value this strategic alliance with KPMG: we want to assist partners in the path of technological innovation and economic recovery. Technology must be able to make our projects more sustainable and successful. ”

The session continued with the intervention of the four speakers of the KPMG team who have drawn a promising future for the Blue Economy. They have highlighted its great potential for the transformative, real capacity of all the projects and sectors that make it up. In addition, they stressed the need for the sector to be ready to participate in all public aid that will be presented in the coming days. These will be focused, in large part, on technological innovation.

Jordi Oliver, head of the public sector at KPMG, emphasized that in order to participate in the NEXT GENERATION funds, companies and Cluster partners must be ready. "We need real, solid and viable projects, as everyone is ready to apply for these grants, and we need to present high-level projects to be eligible." He also pointed out that “this aid and the Blue Economy coincide in the goal of networking projects, in collaboration between different agents and regions. And the Cluster is a good space to find these synergies between projects and territories ”.

According to Jean Luc Lardy, engineer and coordinator of the KPMG tax team, “despite not having a set schedule, it is important to have well-defined projects and business plans worked out, as opportunities can arise at any time. ” On the other hand, Jean Luc Lardy himself has invited the members of the Cluster to work on “projects that have a real impact on society. They must be finalist projects, with the capacity to compete and transform, creating jobs, strengthening digitalisation or strengthening sustainability ”.

For his part, Joaquim Martínez, Director of Consulting Corporates, Strategy & Transformation KPMG, stressed that projects related to digital transformation and Ports 4.0 are likely to receive a lot of aid from institutions. He took stock of the first line already awarded and encouraged partners to think of more ideas to be able to develop within the framework of the ports. "This aid, which will now issue a second call, is focused on ideas and projects for the port logistics sector, understood in a broad sense," he explained.

To close this webinar, Axel Hernandez, Director Technology Enablement KPMG, has made a simile with the nautical sector, indicating that today's webinar should serve as the warning signal and the warning flag before the departure of 'a regatta for all those companies and partners of the Cluster that want to present projects to the European Funds.
