Working onboard a cruise, is it an option?

Barcelona is a world capital in relation to cruising traffic: nearly 2.5 million cruise passengers came to this city last year. About half of the 70 Barcelona Clúster Nàutic members have participated this morning in the briefing that the association has organized with several educational institutions in order to enhance expertise and excellence in training to generate quality employment in the marine industry in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area. The Barcelona Clúster Nàutic leads the economic recovery in the marine industry in Spain

The association of Barcelona’s companies related to the nautical sector, the Barcelona Clúster Nàutic, adds more than 65 members two years after its creation. The growth of the cluster is analogous to the sector, which following the deep economic crisis that went through, it’s recovering led by his epicentre in Barcelona, where it converges industry, companies, institutions and research centres with a high potential for generating wealth and added value. Economic impact of sailing competitions in Barcelona

This summer Barcelona is once again the world capital of competition sailing. Along with the traditional regattas such as the Trofeo Conde de Godó and Puig Vela Classic, this year has seen additions to Barcelona's calendar of benchmark nautical competitions such as the First Open International Sea Rowing, the recovered Thousand Miles Regatta, the Nacra 17 Junior Europe Championship and the ORC World Championship. read_more

Barcelona Nautical Cluster continues to grow. Firm commitment to environmental maritime practices

The Port of Barcelona will apply rebates to port fees for vessels that prove their sustainable environmental practices. To foster good environmental practices also in the maritime area, the Port of Barcelona will spend up to € 1 million in rebates for vessels meeting design and environmental practice standards. With these measures, the organisation recognises the three main incentive schemes used in European and world major ports such as the Environmental Ship Index, the Clean Shipping Index and the Green Award. read_more

The ORC class world cruiser championship opened on Sunday 28 and will be held in Barcelona until the end of week. The presentation of the competition at the Race Village at the facilities of the Barcelona Royal Yacht Club (Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona), served to introduce the nearly 100 participating teams from 23 different countries. read_more

On Friday 29 May, Barcelona Nautical Cluster participated in the last session of the Clusters Summer School, organised by IESE, and focused on the policies and actions needed to increase the competitiveness of cities and the opportunities for development. Toni Tió took part in a round table accompanied by Antoni Subira, IESE professor and now president of the advisory councils of The Competitiveness Institute (TCI) and the Clusters and Competitiveness foundation; Josep Maria Piqué, director of the 22@ Barcelona project; Josep Ramon Ferrer, director of Smart City strategy at Barcelona City Council, and Austin Kilroy, from the World Bank's Cities and Competitiveness area. Joan Guiu Regatta kicks off the summer sailing season

A new edition of the Joan Guiu Regatta, one of the city's 'must attend' sailing events and an international benchmark event for solo sailing or in pairs, was held last Sunday. Xavier Rocas and Manuel Jene won in their vessel Cometa a Dos, with a time of 58 hours, stealing the victory from the Valentina, which, even though it came in earlier, was awarded second place after applying the time compensation under the ORC measurement system. read_more


Agreement between Barcelona Nàutic Clúster and the Faculty of Nautical Studies

The Faculty of Nautical Studies of Barcelona and Barcelona Nàutic Clúster have reached an agreement to enable companies and organisations associated to the Cluster to receive final-year students to carry out their end-of-degree projects. read_more

Puig Vela Classic Barcelona has reached its eighth edition

From 15 to 18 July, what has now become one of the city's 'must attend' event sailing events will be held at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona. The 8th Puig Vela Classic is filling its sails and warming up its engines in an edition that has established itself as a benchmark in the world of classic sailing. Fort Lauderdale and Mataró reinforce their twinning agreement

Taking advantage of the first anniversary of the twinning between the cities of Fort Lauderdale and Mataró, a Catalan business delegation travelled to Florida in March to promote the relationship between the two cities. The visit also served to explore new business opportunities, including the possibility of developing the Port of Mataró as a benchmark marina for the repair and maintenance of yachts travelling around the Mediterranean. read_more

Training and competitiveness of the nautical sector the main topics of the debate on the "Spain Brand in the nautical sector"

There was a large turnout at the Third Nautical Congress organised by the National Association of Nautical Companies, ANEN. The event included various presentations, round tables and the participation of many experts and professionals from the sector. One of the debates, held at the end of the first day, concerned the "Spain Brand in the nautical sector" and was moderated by Toni Tió, President of Barcelona Nautical Cluster, and attended by the designer Iñigo Toledo, General Manager of Shipyards Majorca, Diego Colón de Carvajal, and sail designer Juan Meseguer. read_more


70 boats confirm they will take part in the ORC World Championship

In 2015 Barcelona will again be the scene of one of the major international nautical events of the year. From 27 June to 4 July Barcelona will host the ORC World Championship, organised by the Barcelona Royal Yacht Club (Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona). So far, with the first application period closed, 70 vessels from 17 different countries have registered to take part. These are extraordinary figures, considering that the contest aims to close the registration of participants at 120 and there are still more than 4 months to go until the Championship. read_more

The Third Nautical Congress will be held on 11 and 12 March in Barcelona and will be organised by the National Association of Nautical Companies (Associació Nacional d’Empreses Nàutiques, ANEN), the employers' organisation that brings together 90% of companies in the nautical sector in Spain. The "design et al" magazine has shortlisted Marcelo Penna Yacht Design in one of the categories of the renowned International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015 for yacht design. The company associated with Barcelona Clúster Nàutic is a finalist in the category ‘Sailing Yacht over 30 Metres’ for the design of the Lamima, an Indonesian gaff-ketch traditional phinisi. read_more


Recent developments at the Marina Port Vell in the new year

Marina Port Vell closed 2014 with the best results since the marina was transformed in 2010. Last year 282 superyachts berthed at its facilities, most of which used the new docks built during 2013 and 2014. The marina has a 170 berth capacity that can accommodate yachts up to 180 metres long. read_more


Barcelona Nautical Cluster and CIT UPC are to hold a work session to promote the application of technology to nautical companies

On Friday 13 February, Barcelona Clúster Nàutic will be holding a work session in collaboration with the UPC's Centre for Innovation and Technology entitled "Technologies in the Maritime Nautical and Port field - Exploring ideas to create value." The conference is open to all companies in the sector and aims to gain first-hand knowledge of some of the technological projects being developed by companies in the private sector through agreements with the UPC. read_more


Sailing boat registrations in Barcelona grew nearly 22% in 2014

After a period in the red, 2014 was a year of recovery for the marine industry, especially in terms of boat registrations. Over the past year Spain has seen an increase of 9.92%. Growth was particularly positive in Barcelona, rising from 378 in 2013 to 461 registrations in 2014, an increase of 21.96%. Barcelona is the second province, after the Balearic Islands, in the number of registrations and its share of this market in 2014 stood at 10.75%. read_more


Registration is now open for the “Catalunya al través 2015” sail training regatta

On 27 March, Associació Joves per la Mar is to organise the first “Catalunya al través 2015” sail training regatta The association has already opened the registration period and participating vessels have until 28 February to complete their crews. One of the peculiarities of this regatta is that at least half of the team must be under 25 years old. This requirement does not affect the minimum numbers of professional crew or qualified crew members required to sail the vessel. read_more


FEAPDT calls for a reduction in the T-0 fee for foreign vessels

Good news for the nautical sector in our country. The fee will be lower from 2015 and the charging system for T-0 navigational aids fee will be changed. The proposal for this change has come from the Spanish Federation of Sporting and Tourism Ports (FEAPDT), promoted by its president, Gabriel Sandoval, along with the team led by Jaume Prats of Barcelona Advocats, a company associated to Barcelona Nautical Cluster read_more
